cleared up when the patient was about 23. In 1916 she had been having profuse periods and also slight intermenstrual bleeding. She consulted a medical practitioner then, who found fibroid tumours in the uterus and recommended X-ray therapy. Her family asked that a second opinion should be secured and a general surgeon was called in consultation. He confirmed the diagnosis of fibroids. He recommended that as it was very undesirable the patient should have the uterus removed at her age X-ray therapy should be carried out. The first twelve exposures failed to arrest the haemorrhage ; eventually fifteen were necessary to effect what was considered a complete cure. The patient enjoyed good health thereafter and might still be regarded as a very fit woman.
